To me, you are a princess,” Ermengarde said to Sara later. "And you always look like a princess, in your beautiful dresses."

Sara was a princess to another girl, too. This was Becky. She was a servant in Miss Minchin's school, and she was only fourteen years old, but she worked all day and sometimes half the night. She carried things upstairs and downstairs, she cleaned the floors, she made the fires, and she was always tired and hungry and dirty. She and Sara had different lives.
But one day Sara came into her bedroom, and there was Beckey, sleeping in chair.
"Oh, you poor thing!" Sara said.
Juli, her dad, and my grandfather were off to the side talking nonstop about something, and my dad was over with Mrs. Baker looking about as stupid as I felt, standing by myself talking to no one.
My mom flutters over to me and says, “You doing okay, honey?”
“Yeah,” I tell her, but she forces me over to where Granddad is anyway. “Go on, go on,” she whispers. “Dinner will be ready in a minute.”
So I stand there and the group of them opens up, but it's more like a reflex than anything. No one says a word to me. They just keep right on talking about perpetual motion.
Perpetual motion.
My friend, I didn't even know what perpetual motion was. They were talking closed systems, open systems, resistance, energy source,
magnetism … it was like joining a discussion in a different language.

A book should serve as the ax for the frozen sea within us.

becky opened eye and saw Sarah.she stood up immediately.
'oh,miss!'she said.'very sorry,miss!i just sat down...'
'don't be afrid'Sarah said and smiled to becky.'you are too tired because of this.'
'are you going to tell Miss minchin?'becky asked and moved to the door.
'of course not,'Sarah said.'do not run away, please sit donw for a while, you look like tired.'
'oh,no,miss!'becky said.'you are nice,miss.but miss minchin ....'
'don't be so'Sarah said and took becky's hand.
'you are just a little girl, like me,make friend with me.'

A book should serve as the ax for the frozen sea within us.

Beckey opened her eyes and saw Sara. She stood up at once. "Oh, miss!" She said, "I'm sorry, miss! I sat down just now, and..."
"Don't be afraid," Sara said and smiled friendly to Beckey, "you are so tired, just because of it."
"You... are you going to tell Miss Minchin?" Beckey said, and started to go to the door at the same time.
"Of course not," Sara said, "don't run away, sit for a moment, you looks like tired."
"Oh, miss, I can't!" Beckey said, "You are kind, miss, but Miss Minchin, she..."
"Don't be this," Sara said and took Beckey's hands. "You are just a girl, like me, let's make friends."
